The best format is different for every image

Which format makes the smallest file depends on the image. Instead of guessing, we convert each image to every format, compress them all and keep the smallest one.

Why people use TinyPNG

Looks the same, weighs less

We remove detail you can't see, such as unused colors and hidden metadata. The image looks the same and the file is much smaller.

Free, no sign-up

Web Free converts 3 images per session without an account. Web Ultra has no conversion limit.

Trusted since 2012

Designers, developers, marketers and many more: millions of people use TinyPNG. Together they've shrunk over 9 billion images.

How the formats compare

For most websites WebP is the safe default: small files and support in every modern browser. AVIF is smaller still. Keep JPEG for email and print, and PNG for screenshots and files you still want to edit.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

Finding the smallest format: frequently asked questions

What is the best image format for the web?

It depends on the image. WebP opens almost everywhere and AVIF often makes smaller photos. This page tries them all and keeps the smallest.

How do you pick the format?

We convert each image to every format, compress every version and keep the smallest file.

Does it count as one image or five?

One. Every image counts once, however many formats we try.

Can I download another format?

Yes. Open the format list on any image to see every size and download the one you want.

What if the smallest format doesn't open somewhere?

Pick another one from the format list. JPEG XL sometimes wins, and Edge doesn't open it yet; JPG and PNG open everywhere.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Web Pro takes bigger files, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete your images from our servers within 48 hours.

What happens to the metadata?

We remove all metadata, such as camera details, GPS location and editing history, to keep files small. Want to keep metadata? Use the developer API: it can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
