Why convert images to AVIF?

AVIF makes web images very small, and about 96% of browsers show it. We save AVIF at a high quality, so it looks the same, and transparent areas stay. A PNG usually comes out more than 95% smaller and a JPEG more than 70%; screenshots and text can come out larger.

AVIF vs PNG and JPEG

AVIF is for your website, where small files load faster. PNG and JPEG open in every app and form, so keep one for email and uploads. Shopify, Figma and many email clients don't take AVIF.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

Converting to AVIF: frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my AVIF be?

It depends on what you upload. Usually more than 95% smaller for a PNG and more than 70% for a JPEG, measured on real images converted with TinyPNG. WebP and HEIC images get smaller too; screenshots and text can come out larger.

Is the AVIF lossy or lossless?

Lossy, at a high quality setting, so it looks the same at normal viewing sizes.

Can I convert AVIF back to PNG or JPEG?

Yes. Go to AVIF to PNG or AVIF to JPG. Detail removed by compression doesn't come back.

Is AVIF better than WebP?

AVIF is often smaller for photos, but WebP is accepted in more places; Shopify, for example, takes WebP uploads and not AVIF. JPEG and PNG still open everywhere, while AVIF fails in some shops, design tools, older Windows apps and email.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (from 16.4), about 96% of browsers in use. Outside the browser, Windows Photos and Office need the free AV1 Video Extension, and Gmail turns AVIF into JPEG.

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes, like PNG and WebP. Converting AVIF to JPG fills transparent areas with white, and we ask first.

Are JPG and JPEG the same?

Yes. They are the same format; only the file extension differs. Old Windows only allowed three letters for the file extension, so JPEG became .jpg. Renaming one to the other changes nothing about the file.

How do I convert images to AVIF?

Add your images above, choose AVIF and download the result. It works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF is a still image stored with the AV1 video codec, a royalty-free format from the Alliance for Open Media. Websites and image CDNs often serve it because it is small, so it is often what you get when you save an image from a site.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Web Pro takes bigger files, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete your images from our servers within 48 hours.

What happens to the metadata?

We remove all metadata, such as camera details, GPS location and editing history, to keep files small. Want to keep metadata? Use the developer API: it can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
