Why convert JXL (JPEG XL) to JPG?

JPEG XL is new, and many places can't open it yet. Edge, Opera and Samsung Internet don't show it, Windows needs an extension, and most upload forms reject it. A JPG opens everywhere.

Web Free converts 3 images per session without an account. Web Ultra has no conversion limit.

Trusted since 2012

Designers, developers, marketers and many more: millions of people use TinyPNG. Together they've shrunk over 9 billion images.

JPEG XL vs JPG

JPEG XL holds a photo in a smaller file and keeps transparency, which suits photo archives and sites you control. JPG is the format every browser, app and upload form opens. Use JPG when you send, upload or open the file somewhere else.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

JXL (JPEG XL) to JPG: frequently asked questions

Will my image lose quality?

The JPEG XL was already compressed and JPG compresses again, so a little detail goes. At normal viewing sizes it is hard to spot.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG can't store transparency, so we turn transparent areas white. We ask first. To keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP or AVIF instead.

Can I convert JPG back to JPEG XL?

Yes. Use the swap button, or go to JPG to JXL. Detail removed by compression doesn't come back.

Is JPEG XL better than JPG?

JPG to JPEG XL is usually more than 60% smaller, measured on real images converted with TinyPNG, but JPG opens everywhere.

Which browsers support JPEG XL?

Chrome (from 155) and Firefox (from 158) turned it on in October 2026, and Safari has shown JPEG XL stills since version 17. Edge, Opera and Samsung Internet don't open it yet. Check current support on caniuse.com.

Does JPEG XL work on Windows?

Windows 11 24H2 opens it after you install the free JPEG XL Image Extension from the Microsoft Store; Windows 10 needs a third-party plugin.

Are JPG and JPEG the same?

Yes. They are the same format; only the file extension differs. Old Windows only allowed three letters for the file extension, so JPEG became .jpg. Renaming one to the other changes nothing about the file, so converting to JPEG is the same as converting to JPG, and a .jpeg file converts and compresses like a .jpg.

Is JPG lossy?

Yes, always, even at the highest quality setting. Saving a JPG again can lose a little more detail, so keep your original.

How do I convert JPEG XL to JPG?

Add your JPEG XL images above, choose JPG and download the result. This JPEG XL to JPG converter works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is a JXL file?

A .jxl file is an image in JPEG XL, a newer format designed to replace JPG. It can be lossy or lossless, keeps transparency, and can repack a JPG without losing anything. Support is still growing. It opens on iPhones, iPads and Macs (iOS 17 and macOS 14 or later), in Safari, and in Chrome and Firefox since October 2026, on Android too. It doesn't open in Edge yet, and Windows 11 needs the free JPEG XL Image Extension.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Once you log in, Web Pro converts 3 images per session, up to 75 MB each, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like, up to 150 MB each. On every plan, an image can have up to 256 megapixels.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete them automatically after 24 hours.

Does it remove EXIF, XMP and other metadata?

Yes. To keep files small we remove all metadata: EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, and XMP data such as copyright and editing history. Colour profiles are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens and the web. The developer API can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
