Why convert HEIC to WebP?

iPhones save photos as HEIC, but only Safari shows HEIC in a browser. Every current browser shows WebP, so your photos can go straight onto a web page. Converted here, a HEIC photo usually comes out more than 50% smaller.

Why people use TinyPNG

Looks the same, weighs less

We remove detail you can't see, such as unused colors and hidden metadata. The image looks the same and the file is much smaller.

Web Free converts 3 images per session without an account. Web Ultra has no conversion limit.

Trusted since 2012

Designers, developers, marketers and many more: millions of people use TinyPNG. Together they've shrunk over 9 billion images.

HEIC vs WebP

HEIC saves space on your iPhone, but outside Apple's apps it often won't open. WebP is made for the web. Keep HEIC on the phone; use WebP for photos on your website.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

HEIC to WebP: frequently asked questions

Can I convert HEIF files to WebP?

Yes. We accept .heif files like .heic, as long as they hold HEVC or AV1 image data.

How much smaller will my WebP be?

Usually more than 50% smaller than the HEIC you upload, measured on real images converted with TinyPNG. How much depends on the image: photos, flat graphics and screenshots each shrink differently, and images that were already compressed save less.

Will my image lose quality?

The HEIC was already compressed and WebP compresses again, so a little detail goes. At normal viewing sizes it is hard to spot.

Is HEIC better than JPG?

HEIC stores photos in less space, which is why iPhones use it, but JPG opens everywhere. Converted to JPG here, iPhone photos usually come out about half the size of the HEIC, measured on real images converted with TinyPNG.

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

To save space: Apple says HEIC compresses better than JPG at the same visual quality. The catch is compatibility, so you often need a JPG before sharing.

Is WebP lossless or lossy?

Both: a WebP file can use either mode. Converting a lossy WebP to another lossy format, such as JPG, compresses it once more. We save WebP lossy, or lossless when that comes out smaller.

Which browsers and apps support WebP?

About 97% of browsers, including Safari from version 16. Outside the browser it is patchier: Windows 10 may need the free WebP Image Extension, Gmail turns WebP into JPG, and many upload forms reject it.

How do I convert HEIC to WebP?

Add your HEIC photos above, choose WebP and download the result. This HEIC to WebP converter works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is a HEIC file?

A HEIC file is a photo in a HEIF container, compressed with the HEVC video codec. iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it takes less space than JPG. It is lossy.

What is a HEIF or HIF file?

HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, is a container that can hold images in different codecs. HEIC is a HEIF file with HEVC images inside, which is what iPhones save; AVIF is one with AV1 images. A .hif file is a HEIF photo from a camera: Canon, Fujifilm, Sony and other camera makers use this extension. One HEIF file can also hold several images, such as a burst; we convert the main one. Add .heif and .hif files above and they convert like HEIC.

How do I open a HEIC file?

Apple devices open it, and Safari is the only browser that shows it. Windows needs two extensions from the Microsoft Store: the free HEIF Image Extension and the paid HEVC Video Extensions. Despite the name, the HEVC one is what decodes the photo. Or convert it to JPG or PNG here.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Once you log in, Web Pro converts 3 images per session, up to 75 MB each, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like, up to 150 MB each. On every plan, an image can have up to 256 megapixels.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete them automatically after 24 hours.

Does it remove EXIF, XMP and other metadata?

Yes. To keep files small we remove all metadata: EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, and XMP data such as copyright and editing history. Colour profiles are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens and the web. The developer API can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
