Why convert HEIC to AVIF?

iPhones save photos as HEIC, but only Safari shows HEIC in a browser. AVIF opens in about 96% of browsers, so it suits iPhone photos on a website. The AVIF usually comes out smaller than the HEIC.

HEIC vs AVIF

HEIC works well on the phone and in Apple apps. AVIF is built for the web, and nearly every current browser shows it. Use AVIF for photos on your website; use JPG for upload forms and other apps.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

HEIC to AVIF: frequently asked questions

Can I convert HEIF files to AVIF?

Yes. We accept .heif files like .heic, as long as they hold HEVC or AV1 image data.

Will every website accept an AVIF?

No. Browsers show AVIF, but many upload forms and design tools reject it. Use JPG for those.

Will my image lose quality?

The HEIC was already compressed and AVIF compresses again, so a little detail goes. At normal viewing sizes it is hard to spot.

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

To save space: Apple says HEIC compresses better than JPG at the same visual quality. The catch is compatibility, so you often need a JPG before sharing.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (from 16.4), about 96% of browsers in use. Outside the browser, Windows Photos and Office need the free AV1 Video Extension, and Gmail turns AVIF into JPG.

What is the difference between AVIF and HEIC?

Both store photos in a HEIF container: AVIF with AV1 images, HEIC with HEVC images. Both make small photos. AVIF is royalty-free and opens in about 96% of browsers; HEIC opens only in Safari. HEIC is what iPhones save by default.

How do I convert HEIC to AVIF?

Add your HEIC photos above, choose AVIF and download the result. This HEIC to AVIF converter works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is a HEIC file?

A HEIC file is a photo in a HEIF container, compressed with the HEVC video codec. iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it takes less space than JPG. It is lossy.

What is a HEIF or HIF file?

HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, is a container that can hold images in different codecs. HEIC is a HEIF file with HEVC images inside, which is what iPhones save; AVIF is one with AV1 images. A .hif file is a HEIF photo from a camera: Canon, Fujifilm, Sony and other camera makers use this extension. One HEIF file can also hold several images, such as a burst; we convert the main one. Add .heif and .hif files above and they convert like HEIC.

How do I open a HEIC file?

Apple devices open it, and Safari is the only browser that shows it. Windows needs two extensions from the Microsoft Store: the free HEIF Image Extension and the paid HEVC Video Extensions. Despite the name, the HEVC one is what decodes the photo. Or convert it to JPG or PNG here.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Once you log in, Web Pro converts 3 images per session, up to 75 MB each, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like, up to 150 MB each. On every plan, an image can have up to 256 megapixels.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete them automatically after 24 hours.

Does it remove EXIF, XMP and other metadata?

Yes. To keep files small we remove all metadata: EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, and XMP data such as copyright and editing history. Colour profiles are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens and the web. The developer API can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
