Why convert PNG to JPEG XL?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so graphics, screenshots and scans make large files. JPEG XL keeps transparency, and a PNG usually comes out more than 90% smaller. Support is new: Chrome and Firefox turned it on in October 2026, Edge hasn't yet.

PNG to JXL (JPEG XL): frequently asked questions

Does the JPEG XL keep transparent areas?

Yes. Transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent.

Where can't I use a JPEG XL file?

Edge doesn't open it yet, and WordPress and many upload forms don't accept it. Keep a PNG for those.

How much smaller will my JPEG XL be?

Usually more than 90% smaller than the PNG you upload, measured on real images converted with TinyPNG. How much depends on the image: photos, flat graphics and screenshots each shrink differently, and images that were already compressed save less.

Can I convert JPEG XL back to PNG?

Yes. Use the swap button, or go to JXL to PNG. Detail removed by compression doesn't come back.

Is PNG lossless?

Yes. A PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is also why the files are large. Our compressor applies lossy compression by reducing the colours, so its result looks the same rather than being pixel-identical.

Which browsers support JPEG XL?

Chrome (from 155) and Firefox (from 158) turned it on in October 2026, and Safari has shown JPEG XL stills since version 17. Edge, Opera and Samsung Internet don't open it yet. Check current support on caniuse.com.

Is JPEG XL lossless or lossy?

The format does both, and a JPG can be repacked into a smaller lossless JPEG XL that turns back into the exact original. We save JPEG XL lossy, or lossless when that comes out smaller.

Does JPEG XL work on Windows?

Windows 11 24H2 opens it after you install the free JPEG XL Image Extension from the Microsoft Store; Windows 10 needs a third-party plugin.

How do I convert PNG to JPEG XL?

Add your PNGs above, choose JPEG XL and download the result. This PNG to JPEG XL converter works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is a PNG file?

A PNG is an image file in the Portable Network Graphics format. It is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly, and it supports transparency. Most computers and phones save screenshots as PNG, and logos and cut-outs usually are too. Every browser, app and email client opens it.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Once you log in, Web Pro converts 3 images per session, up to 75 MB each, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like, up to 150 MB each. On every plan, an image can have up to 256 megapixels.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete them automatically after 24 hours.

Does it remove EXIF, XMP and other metadata?

Yes. To keep files small we remove all metadata: EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, and XMP data such as copyright and editing history. Colour profiles are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens and the web. The developer API can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
