Why convert AVIF to WebP?

Some tools that take WebP can't read AVIF, including many design tools and upload forms. WebP keeps transparent areas like AVIF, and your file stays about the same size.

AVIF vs WebP

AVIF files are often a little smaller, but WebP opens in more places. Both show in nearly every current browser. Use AVIF on your own website, and WebP for upload forms and tools that don't take AVIF.

“While there are other ways to achieve a 70% reduction in image size, TinyPNG is the easiest and fastest method I’ve found. Plus, it doesn’t alter the image file names, which is great for maintaining SEO integrity.”

AVIF to WebP: frequently asked questions

Will my WebP be smaller than the AVIF?

About the same size. AVIF is already efficient, so a WebP can come out a little smaller or a little bigger. Convert to WebP for where it opens, not to save space.

Will my image lose quality?

The AVIF was already compressed and WebP compresses again, so a little detail goes. At normal viewing sizes it is hard to spot.

Can I convert WebP back to AVIF?

Yes. Use the swap button, or go to WebP to AVIF. Detail removed by compression doesn't come back.

Is AVIF better than WebP?

AVIF is often smaller for photos, but WebP is accepted in more places. JPG and PNG still open everywhere, while AVIF fails in some e-commerce platforms, design tools, older Windows apps and email.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (from 16.4), about 96% of browsers in use. Outside the browser, Windows Photos and Office need the free AV1 Video Extension, and Gmail turns AVIF into JPG.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, in both its lossy and lossless mode. Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white, and we ask first; convert to PNG, JXL or AVIF to keep them.

Which browsers and apps support WebP?

About 97% of browsers, including Safari from version 16. Outside the browser it is patchier: Windows 10 may need the free WebP Image Extension, Gmail turns WebP into JPG, and many upload forms reject it.

How do I convert AVIF to WebP?

Add your AVIF images above, choose WebP and download the result. This AVIF to WebP converter works in your browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install.

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF is a still image compressed with the AV1 video codec, a royalty-free format from the Alliance for Open Media, and stored in a HEIF container, like HEIC. It can be lossy or lossless, though most AVIF photos are lossy. Websites and image CDNs often serve it because it is small, so it is often what you get when you save an image from a site.

How do I open an AVIF file?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show AVIF. Windows Photos and Office need the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. Or convert it to JPG, PNG or WebP here.

Is it free?

Yes. Web Free converts 3 images per session, up to 5 MB each, without an account. Once you log in, Web Pro converts 3 images per session, up to 75 MB each, and Web Ultra converts as many as you like, up to 150 MB each. On every plan, an image can have up to 256 megapixels.

Are my images private?

Yes. We store your images encrypted, download links expire after 8 hours, and we delete them automatically after 24 hours.

Does it remove EXIF, XMP and other metadata?

Yes. To keep files small we remove all metadata: EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, and XMP data such as copyright and editing history. Colour profiles are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens and the web. The developer API can keep the copyright, creation date and location.
